What Is a Sliding Patio Door?

CLERA WINDOWS + DOORS · PATIO DOORS GUIDE

What Is a Sliding Patio Door?

A sliding patio door is a large glass door in which one panel slides horizontally along a track to open, while the other panel remains in place. It is the most common patio door style found in Canadian homes due to its space efficiency, ease of use, and clean contemporary look. Sliding doors are well-suited for smaller decks, patios, or interior spaces, where a swinging door would be impractical.

Key Features

  • Door Frame: Most are crafted from vinyl, aluminum, or fibreglass.
  • Glass panels: Usually double or triple-pane with Low-E coating and argon gas fill for better energy efficiency.
  • Track and rollers: The hardware quality will impact how smoothly the door glides over its lifespan.
  • Locking System: Typically, either a Mortise lock, which is built directly into the panel, a keyed lock, or a multi-point lock, all differing in aesthetics, ease of use, and security level.

Maintenance Tips

Over time, rollers and tracks can wear, making the door drag or difficult to operate. Regular track cleaning and lubrication of the rollers will significantly improve the door's smooth operation.

Why Clera? Clera sliding patio doors feature stainless steel tandem rollers and a multi-point locking system, engineered for thousands of smooth, secure cycles.
