Are Patio Doors Energy Efficient?

CLERA WINDOWS + DOORS · PATIO DOORS GUIDE

Are Patio Doors Energy Efficient?

Yes! Modern patio doors can be highly energy efficient because they are mostly glass. Glass coatings and insulated gas work like a shield to block heat and cold, reducing your energy consumption. Keep in mind that performance varies significantly by product quality, specifications, and glass package.

Energy Efficiency Features

  • Double or triple-pane glass: Triple-pane provides significantly better insulation and is recommended for Canadian climates.
  • Low-E coating: An invisible layer that allows natural light in, while reflecting away heat, keeping indoor warmth trapped inside during winter and blocking outdoor heat during summer.
  • Argon or krypton gas fill: Dense inert gas between panes slows heat transfer more effectively than air alone.
  • Insulated frame: Vinyl and fibreglass frames use a smart, multi-layered design to block heat and cold from transferring through the edges of the door.
  • Weatherstripping and threshold seal: A tight, continuous seal prevents air infiltration, which is responsible for a significant portion of heat loss.

What Certification Should I Look For?

Look for patio doors carrying the ENERGY STAR® Canada certification as a baseline quality indicator. ENERGY STAR® products are tested and certified to meet performance thresholds for specific Canadian climate zones.

Why Clera? Clera patio doors are available with triple-pane glass, Low-E coatings, and argon gas fills, and meet ENERGY STAR® certification requirements for all Canadian climate zones.
