How to install a bay window the right way

  • Measure the dimensions of the window and send it in to the manufacturer; double-check your work to avoid error. Remember the company will be using the information you send them.
  • Remove all the old hardware; the sashes, trim and frame will need to be removed before you can install the new window.
  • Examine the shingles beneath the window for rot; replace damaged pieces accordingly. Be sure to completely remove any affected sheathing.
  • Create a new base that is flush and squared for mounting the new window.
  • Install the bay window and attach support clamps to keep it in place.
  • Install shims on the inside of the window to level and secure it.
  • Install the roof cap that will go above the outer window; don’t forget to seal it well.
  • Add insulation and screens to finish the job.
  • Never attempt to install bay window on your own; hire a professional for upper-level installation jobs. The risks associated with placing a bay window in an opening above ground can not be overstated.

The first thing you will want to do is make your measurements. Write everything down neatly so the manufacturer can easily read the numbers. The last thing you want to receive is a new window that is sized incorrectly. To avoid unnecessary expenses like this, remember to take your time. Bay window installations should never be rushed.

The installation process is fairly straight forward; given their shape and size, however, bay windows do require a few more steps. Start by removing all the old hardware; the next thing you want to do is inspect the shingles beneath the window sill. This is very important; if you fail to inspect the surface for wood rot, you run the risk of damaging your new window. Construct a new base for the window then install it; don’t forget to attach and secure support clamps to keep it from falling out of the frame.

The next step is to add shims on the inner side of the window; these will level it out flush. The roof cap should be next on the list; make sure to seal it for protection against the elements. Add the correct amount of insulation and screens if you would like to complete the installation job.
